The Combined Anglican and Presbyterian     Churches of Akaroa & Banks Peninsula

Sunday 27th August – St Peter’s – Holy Communion – 9.30 am
A warm welcome to parishioners and visitors alike.
Please join us for morning tea and fellowship in St Peter’s lounge following our service this morning.
THE COLLECT
Living God, you sent your Son Jesus to your people.  Embolden your church to proclaim Jesus as Messiah, and to trust in him. We ask this through the Son of the Living God, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
MIKE’S MESSAGE
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today, I am focusing on our Old Testament story of the baby Moses in the bulrushes. The main characters in this story include a shrewd politically minded man, the King of Egypt, who enslaves a minority people to accomplish an amazing building project – the whole city of Aktenaten, which was built in two years! And, several God-fearing women: two mid-wives, Moses’ mother and sister, and unexpectedly Pharaoh’s own daughter. In this story, the women are the heroes who stand up for the value of life in the face of an unjust Pharaoh. The Pharaoh wants to kill all the male Hebrew children and assimilate the Hebrew people into Egyptian culture by slavery and enforced inter-marriage. But God will not give up on his people nor his purpose to increase and bless them. He uses faithful women to be the guardians of new life, and the hope of a future for his people.
While the church on the peninsula faces challenges to its growth and future, I believe that He will not let go of us until his will is accomplished here. I also thank God for the steadfast faith of women in our community. Let’s acknowledge their quiet heroism.
God bless! Mike

REPORT ON COMMUNITY LUNCH
On Friday, a small but enthusiastic group enjoyed our community lunch.  Builders at Trinity were invited as were medical students who were visiting Akaroa this past week. We also had some newcomers from Duvauchelle who are keen to become regulars.  What an amazing mix of people!  There was a steady hum of conversation and a very entertaining quiz presented by Gerald.  Thanks for the ‘brain workout’ Gerald!!  There were two soups on offer and many people opted to try both and agreed that they were equally yummy.  Our ongoing thanks to the people who make the soup and donate food and their time, and to Wendy for her ‘well-oiled machine’ organising this valuable and fun outreach activity.  Our thoughts go to those at Pompallier House who were unable to join us because of illness and those in our wider community who are fighting off the nasty flu bug.  We look forward to catching up with you all at our next lunch on Friday 29th September and remember to ask anyone you know to come along – all are welcome, the company is great and it’s free!!!!!!
MONTHLY GROCERY DONATIONS
Please remember your grocery donations each month.  If we all contributed one item per month we would have a wonderful amount to donate to Heartlands, for those in our community in need. Winter time can be especially difficult for those families who are under stress.
FREEZER MINISTRY
Meals are given to those in need or crisis, in consultation with Kerry at Heartlands.  Soup and casseroles (meat and veg) can be put in ice cream containers and left, along with ready-served meals, in the freezer at Trinity. Please label them with contents, number of servings and date made, and add the details to the notebook on top of the freezer.  Frozen dinners from the supermarket are also appreciated. If you know of someone who is unwell or under stress who would appreciate a cooked meal, please contact Wendy – phone 304 7151.
PRAYER GROUPS
A reminder that a second Prayer Group has started up on Wednesday mornings at 10.30 am at St Peter’s, to pray for the life of our Banks Peninsula parish, and any other concerns, large or small. Everyone is welcome, and those attending may like to stay on for the 11 am service of Holy Communion afterwards.
 PARISH VISITING
If you are aware of anyone who would appreciate a visit from our vicar Mike, or if you would like him to call on you, please don’t hesitate to contact him – details below.
