The building of St. Peters

St. Peters Anglican Church has been given the top classification, Category 1, by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. As one of Akaroa’s earliest buildings, and one of its most beautiful, it has many points of interest. It was built in 1863 during the pioneering heyday, when the town was growing very rapidly, so rapidly in fact that its first Anglican Church which had been erected 12 years earlier at the southern end of the town, was getting too small. The decision to relocate the Anglican Church site to the northern end of town was quite controversial, because at that time, this end of town was mainly lived in by Akaroa’s French community and was known as the French end.
