Mike’s Message
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
There are many today who do not believe in resurrection. Neither did the Sadducees who in today’s reading from Luke question Jesus upon the law of Moses (Luke 20: 27-38). The Sadducees were from priestly families and were mainly interested in maintaining proper religious conduct centred around the Temple. Resurrection had little interest to them. A question in a form of a story is posed to Jesus. … Read More »

Lord, Jesus Christ,
Son of God,
Have mercy upon me,
A sinner.
Mike’s Message
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Following from last Sunday’s gospel, Jesus continues to teach about prayer (Luke 18: 9-14). He tells a parable about two people praying to God. One of them, pleased with his moral behaviour, gives thanks to God, assured of his own righteousness. Whereas the other is reticent before God and acknowledges his contribution to the pain and injustice his community, calling himself a ‘sinner.’ Jesus seems to be pointing out the importance of our attitude in prayer. Elsewhere Jesus says, “Do not judge others, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgement you make … Read More »

Welcome to our services today.

Today’s Prayer
Lord God, king of the universe;
it is your strength, not the size of our faith
that supports us in all of life’s difficulties;
May we be content to simply serve,
and, when our labours are done,
all gather as equals around your table,
with Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen
Mike’s Message
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
In today’s gospel we hear the disciples pleading with Jesus “Lord, increase our faith!” (Luke 17:5). They have just been told, if someone offends them (sins against them), and that person repents (turns back to them and is sorry) then they must forgive them. And, even if they keep offending us seven … Read More »

Today’s Prayer
God of resurrection,

of poverty, hunger and injustice,
and the whole earth live to praise your name;
through Jesus the Risen Christ. Amen
Mike’s Message
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today we welcome Rev Hamish Galloway who will lead our 4pm service. Today is also the feast of St Michael and All Angels. Angels in the Bible are intermediaries between God and humanity – often with the task of bringing God’s word to people. Michael is considered in the Book of Daniel as the protector of Israel (God’s people), and in the Book of … Read More »

through Jesus Christ, the one who challenges and enables us to be faithful. Amen
Mike’s Message
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Jesus preached in parables, and the stories he used were often not obvious in their full meaning. Today’s gospel is such a case (Luke 16:1-13). He once said, “This is why I speak to people in parables, because seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand” (Matthew 13:13). Like any work of literature or … Read More »

MIKE’S MESSAGE
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ
Our first reading today is from the Book of Proverbs chapter 22. Proverbs was something of a manual for living a godly and upright life. Modern scholarship has found similarities to what we hear today with a three-thousand-year-old Egyptian text called Instruction … Read More »

Message from the Diocesan Manager
Dear Friends, It has been a momentous week for the Christchurch Diocese. The Electoral College went very well. Archbishop Sir David Moxon, who was the President of the College, and Bishop Ellie Sanderson, chaplain to the College, presided at the opening Eucharist attended by 192 members of the Electoral College. Proposers, seconders, and supporters spoke in favour of their own respective candidates during the conference on Saturday and all discussion was respectful and encouraging. I was impressed that a number of periods of silence and prayer were … Read More »
