THE COMBINED CHURCH OF AKAROA AND THE BAYS

Sunday 28 October 2018

9.30am Trinity

Welcome to our service this morning, particularly if you are visiting Akaroa. We would like to especially welcome Bishop Richard and Jackie Randerson who are making their third visit to our Combined Church. Richard will preach at our 9.30 am service at Trinity, and at 11.00 am will lead a seminar in the hall. Please join us for morning tea after the service and stay for the seminar.

Visitors and newcomers are especially welcome.

Today’s Prayer

Lord Jesus, by the loneliness of your suffering on the cross,

be near to all who are desolate, or in pain and sorrow,

and let your presence transform our sorrow into comfort,

and our loneliness into fellowship with you;

for the sake of your tender mercy. Amen

 Mike’s Message

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ

Once again, thank you for supporting our Fair last Saturday. We give thanks for making just over $6000.

Parts of the Bible are challenging, and the book of Job is one of them. Job is a respected member of his community, but God allows ‘satan’ to test him. He loses his wealth and his children; and his religious friends tell him that God must be punishing him for sin or lack of faith. Job understandably gets depressed and angry, but he never loses his conviction in God. The last chapter of Job shows that through his suffering he has experienced God at a deeper level, and subsequently it has changed his orientation to life and faith. The last stage of his life, we are told, is more blessed than before his trials and tribulations.

God bless!   Mike

COMMUNITY LUNCH

Last Friday we had another very successful community lunch at Trinity. Soup and muffins were provided by the pupils of Penny Mann’s hospitality class from the Akaroa Area School. They did a fine job and mixed well with all. Some parsnip, celery and leeks from Clive’s garden were given to the school for the soup and some tomatoes from Keith’s garden.

There will be one more community lunch this year on 30th November which will have a Christmas theme.

CHURCH FAIR

A big THANK YOU to all those of you who helped to make our Church Fair such a success last weekend, including those who cleared the church, transported and set up tables, collected boxes of White Elephants from various parts of the parish, those who spent months creating exquisite Christmas and other unique hand-crafted items, those who contributed home-made preserves and home-baked goods, those who spent all Friday setting up their stalls in the Church and Hall and “manned” them on Saturday, Carol for co-ordinating the raffle and her helpers, Sarah and Jeannette who kept everyone nourished, and Kate for looking after all the money; and when it was all over, those who put everything straight again, cleaned and set up the church, returned tables, delivered stuff to the tip and boxes to be kept for next year’s fair. It was a wonderful team effort, blessed with fine weather which helped to create a happy and festive occasion. We raised a total of $6,383.70 which was a great achievement – thank you all!

ALL SAINTS SERVICE AT ST PETERS ON SUNDAY 4TH NOVEMBER

It has been a tradition to remember in our prayers the lives of the faithful and our loved ones who have died, on the Sunday closest to All Saints Day. We will still have a chance to do this on Sunday 4th November, at our 9.30am service. However, this year I would like us to also remember our living saints who often quietly get on with being the hands and feet of Christ, sharing the gospel through their love and actions. There will be large piece of paper that people can put a name of someone they want us to give thanks to God for. Think about who our living saints are. Mike

100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF THE GREAT WAR

On Sunday 11th November, there will be an Armistice Commemoration in the War Memorial Garden in Akaroa. People are asked to be assembled by 10.50am. At 11.00am, both St Peter’s and St Patrick’s will ring their bells for two minutes to remember the public joy that people felt at the end of the war. If you have a family member who served in World War One, please bring a white flower to lay at the foot of the war memorial at the end of the service.

POMPALLIER VILLAGE TRUST has a villa for sale.

HYMNS

For those of you who enjoy singing or listening to hymns, this is a reminder that you can watch Songs of Praise on Shine TV (free channel) on Sundays at 10.30 am and/or 7.30 pm, and listen to Hymns for Sunday Mornings on the Concert Programme at 7.30 am. They are both highly recommended. If you are handy with a timer, you can record these programmes to listen to later!
