THE COMBINED CHURCH OF AKAROA AND THE BAYS
Sunday 4 November 2018
9.30am St Peter’s, Akaroa
11.30am St Luke’s, little Akaloa
Welcome to our services this morning, particularly if you are visiting Banks Peninsula. Please join us for morning tea in the lounge after the service. Visitors and newcomers are especially welcome.
Today’s Prayer
Almighty God, we are your saints, each of us is a unique part of the church. Today we give you thanks for all your saints – holy and ordinary, living and past who together make up the mystical body of Christ.
Give us grace to grow in virtue and to seek you daily;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Mike’s Message
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ
Today is All Saints Sunday, when we remember and give thanks for all the saints of the church. It easy only to think of the saints as those whom the Church have given the ascription of ‘Saint’ as if it were a spiritual knighthood. But originally ‘saints’ meant all God’s people, and that includes the people like you and me who are trying our best to do God’s will. Today we will remember and give thanks for all the saints of our churches of Akaroa-Banks Peninsula – some who have passed on into God presence, and others who are still alive. Take the opportunity today to remember specific people and give thanks to God for them. God bless! Mike
SOCIAL JUSTICE ADVOCACY
After Richard Randerson’s seminar last Sunday it was suggested that Christians could have influence in social justice issues by joining online advocacy groups. The following are some non-political advocacy groups active in New Zealand and elsewhere, which parishioners may be interested in:
www.actionstation.org.nz – ActionStation is a vehicle for people of all backgrounds to unite, independent of party politics, special interests and the usual labels that divide us.
www.greenpeace.org/new-zealand – Greenpeace seeks to protect biodiversity in all its forms, prevent pollution and abuse of the earth’s ocean, land, air and fresh water, and end all nuclear threats, promote peace, global disarmament and non-violence.
www.350.org.nz – 350 Aotearoa seeks to persuade NZ institutions to divest from fossil fuel investments (global movement – 350.org). Five Anglican dioceses have agreed to full divestment.
www.sumofus.org – SumOfUs is a community of people from around the world who want to buy from, work for and invest in companies that respect the environment, treat their workers well and respect democracy.
100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF THE GREAT WAR
On Sunday 11th November, there will be an Armistice Commemoration in the War Memorial Garden in Akaroa. People are asked to be assembled by 10.50am. At 11.00am, both St Peter’s and St Patrick’s will ring their bells for two minutes to remember the public joy that people felt at the end of the war. If you have a family member who served in World War One, please bring a white flower to lay at the foot of the war memorial at the end of the service.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
“Keep in mind that our community is not composed of those who are already saints, but of those who are trying to become saints. Therefore, let us be extremely patient with each other’s faults and failures.” – Mother Teresa
