St John the Evangelist Church, Okains Bay

St. John the Evangelist, Okains Bay built in 1863, is one of the oldest stone churches in Canterbury, with a Historic Places Trust Category 2 listing. A few years ago, the local community undertook extensive restoration work on the church, but unfortunately it was very badly damaged in the 2010 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. It remains closed while discussions about its restoration are ongoing. As a much loved landmark for its local community, we are optimistic that a way will be found to restore it. In the meantime, fifth Sunday services are held at Okains Bay School.
